Product Notes

'My mind is unleashed and unfurled,' Jason Nottingham sings in 'Liquid,' a standout tune on 6FG's new release, Devotion. This is a statement which could easily be made by everyone lucky enough to hear this fine disc. Devotion has set my own mind to unfurling and brought back some of my faith in amplified music. There may be something new under the sun after all. From the startling cover photo of fetish model, Asia, French-kissing Ronald McDonald, to the boozin' and losin' nihilistic yawp of 'Liquid,' Seattle band 6FG is able to make the tired beast of rock'n roll new again. Slugging out a chugging, heavy, often dissonant, mix of guitar based rock, 6FG is nonetheless able to fashion light, lofty, beauty when those everpresent guitars are combined with Nottingham's expressive vocals and some clever, alt-tinged lead playing. The disc kicks off with the explosive, 'Firecracker,' a barn burner of tasty anger and minor explosive devices. 'Liquid' is a dark, electrified, suicidal, ballad with power in the lyrics and melody. Perhaps the most interesting song, from a human perspective, (and rock critics are occasionally human) is '1987,' Nottingham's tribute and farewell to 80s east coast hardcore. Back in the day, Nottingham was in rightcoast bands that released vinyl with some success. In '1987,' the song, Nottingham invokes the names of old bands, says goodbye to Wendy O Williams and concludes by singing, 'I will not die in Willimantic.' The effect is potent beyond measure. We all have our Willimantics to escape from, and with luck, we escape alive. There is nary a clinker among the six songs on Devotion. This is pretty good for something which cost only $750 to record. (Indie rock excellence is still affordable, kids.) [review by Dave Liljengren, Pandemonium Online]
