Description
African Herbsman is one of the most essential recordings of original Bob Marley & the Wailers material. As a release, African Herbsman comes from Soul Revolution, an album produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry, and a pair of self-produced sides including the original versions of "Lively Up Yourself" and "Trench Town Rock." The album also contains original recordings of tracks Marley would revisit later on, including "Kaya" and "Duppy Conqueror." This is burning, steaming, heavy reggae, lined deep with Perry's bare-bones, hard bass style and countered with the Wailers' stunning vocals. Peter Tosh's guitar playing and his harmony singing with Bunny Wailer are watermarks Marley never reached again, even with the I-Threes. The mastering job here is nothing short of stellar, bringing all of the Perry's "dirty" production style out of the murk and capturing his excellent vocal separations for what they are: instances of nearly angelic grace and pure dread groove.
