Description
This disc was Gramophone's "Recording of the Month" for April 1999.
What becomes a legend most? After her triumph at the 1965 Warsaw Chopin competition, Martha Argerich garnered a reputation for volatility, her intense, impulsive playing revealing an intuitive genius willing and breathtakingly able to follow its hunches. Later, her semi-withdrawal from public performance would husband that reputation into a bonafide mystique, which would get a reality check when she returned to the concert stage as a concerto soloist in the late 1990s.
This disc of the two Chopin Piano Concertos revisits the material of earlier successes and shows the legend to be alive and a lot more than well. Argerich's playing is full of charm, poetry, and real humor, perhaps mellower than years before, but still able to dazzle and run with cat-like freedom and agility. She is inimitable, but Charles Dutoit and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal cope sympathetically and are beautifully recorded doing so. This is one of the great recordings of these works.
