Description
Coming of age in Bristol's sound system culture, Pinch first encountered dubstep in 2004. Travelling through to an early FWD>> night, the producer returned home and immediately carved out a new identity for himself.Founding Tectonic, Pinch has been one of bass music's defining figures for almost a decade. Now the influential DJ is set to take charge of a new mix for the FabricLive series, featuring some exclusive cuts.Following on from instalments by Pearson Sound and Shackleton - who the Bristol producer recently collaborated with - Pinch is set to take charge of FabricLive 61.Reflecting his tastes out outlook, the vinyl only mix is typically eclectic. Speaking recently, Pinch explained that his older brother had a pivotal influence on the development of his musical knowledge. My older brother (big age gap - he is 13 years older than me) had the biggest musical influence on me and made me tapes of music I cherished over the years that followed - lots of On-U-Sound releases and 80s dub, Colourbox, Prince, Frank Zappa - all sorts. When I was 15, I went to two gigs that changed my outlook on music at the time" he reflected."The first was Leftfield, and the second was Goldie (with Doc Scott and Peshay on support) as part of his 1995 'Timeless' tour. After that I got into jungle and electronica and lots of the 'Bristol Sound' - Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky - that sort of thing - and a little later; house, techno and drum & bass.Featuring recent collaborations, exclusive remixes and more FabricLive61 was put together using a vinyl only set. I am a supporter of the sound of vinyl and the cultural associations I make with this format so it was important to me - even if I do ultimately end up abandoning my beloved format one day - to stick by my guns and record the mix like this.""I also made the whole mix start and finish in the same spot - meaning that the entire DJ mix can work as a loop if you put it on repeat. I really like the idea of certain kinds of music existing in its own infinite context and setting up the mix to loop like that was playing entirely into that idea.
