Description
The use of the sample stretches back into the music’s earliest days. In fact ‘the break’ was there first, before rappers, before records and definitely before the music had a name. ‘Sampled’ collects together many of the best of the original classic soul songs that have been twisted and utilised in creative and imaginative ways. It works as a tribute to the greats who made them and those that have been inspired by them. Some of the most successful at adapting were the likes of Kanye West who could use something straight and funky like Cold Grits version of ‘It’s Your Thing’ but also pull something totally unexpected from his bag like Ray Charles 1955 breakthrough hit ‘I Gotta Woman’ to create his hit ‘Gold Digger’. Whilst Jay Z – started who began recording in the so-called golden age of sampling in the late 80s and early 90s often uses classic funk breaks such as Wilson Pickett’s ‘Get Me Back On Time, Engine Number 9’, which formed the basis of ’99 Problems’ percussive drive.Sampling is now fundamental to the way in which music is made around the world. Be it the James Brown drums that can be found in any context from rock records to jingles on TV adverts. One of the biggest Australian records of 2011 Goyte feat. Kimbra’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ is built on a sample of Luiz Bonfa’s 1967 bossa nova groove ‘Seville’, whilst soul singer Frank Ocean, part of LA’s Odd Future collective ties himself into soul’s southern roots when he uses Percy Sledge’s ‘When A Man Loves A Woman’ to underpin his ‘Non Stop’.
