Meanwhile As Night Falls
Released on akrasia records Meanwhile, as night falls.... is the new studio album of original songs from acclaimed UK singer-songwriter Angie Palmer, produced and recorded by Cornershop's Alan Gregson. On Meanwhile... Angie's strong, effortless singing and incredible acoustic guitar playing is again backed by her band 'The Revelators' and also by B.J. Cole on pedal steel guitar and classical percussionist Sophie Hastings. Described by Bob Harris as "one of Britain's greatest singer-songwriters", Angie's music has been dubbed 'English Americana' and she has been compared to Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, but is actually like no-one else. When you listen to the depth, scope and sensitivity of her songs, you immediately recognize someone whose singular talent has been nurtured by her own extraordinary travelling life. The music on the new record ranges from bluegrass and rockabilly to simple acoustic country ballads and includes the musically ambitious Weeping Wood, an 81/2 minute epic described by one French music critic as 'an incredible masterpiece'. Angie's uncompromising genre-crossing mix of country, blues, rock and folk, served up with equal measures of aggression and tenderness has led the British press to call her the "British Lucinda Williams" and while this is not too far from the mark Angie is very much an original artist pursuing her own musical and lyrical path. The new album is the result of two years of writing, much of which was done while living on the edge of a forest in deepest France. From this remote landscape comes the troubling sense of what nightfall conceals, both literal and symbolic, that haunts the songs on this new record and brings them into a unified artistic vision. Written by Angie in collaboration with Paul Mason, the twelve songs on Meanwhile... finds Angie extending her unique talent for narrative songwriting into the territory of Russian folk stories (The Fiery Lake), Biblical parables (Hey Lazarus!) and old fairy tales (Hunting the Wolf.) To those who know Angie's previous recordings ("a gifted and original artist" Maverick; "consummately literate" Acoustic Magazine; "a poet's flourish" Americana UK) this will not come as any surprise. Those who don't yet know Angie's music will find the new record a good place to start for they will find in these twelve songs the art of the singer-songwriter at it's highest.
