Take a magical journey with Ariel Rose Tebben's lush and enchanting album, Verticordia! Inspired by the poetry of Irish authors W.B.Yeats and Arthur O'Shaughnessy and the Pre-Raphaelite masterpieces of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ariel blends her own compositions seamlessly with haunting old tunes and stories. The result is a timeless collection you will enjoy for ages to come. Ariel's angelic vocals are set against the perfect backdrop of her Celtic harp, guitar, piano and bodhran (Irish drum). Verticordia includes great original story songs including the re-telling the old English folklore of how the wren became king of the birds on 'Wren In The Rosebush' and her bittersweet song 'Persephone' told from the point of view of the ancient queen of the underworld. Also very beautiful is 'My Singing Bird', which made me feel as though I was walking among a cathedral of great trees. The lyrical romance of Yeats takes new flight on her version of 'Down By The Salley Gardens' and again on 'The Rose Of The World', a poem which Ariel has set to soft, ethereal music. Other highlights include the classic Dick Gaughan piece 'Both Sides The Tweed' and 'Johnny's Dance In The Clouds', a touching instrumental tribute that Ariel penned for the late Scottish fiddler Johnny Cunningham. Marilee Hord on violin and Skip VonKuske on cello lend their wonderful talents to the album, making this CD even more of a treat! I thoroughly enjoyed each song on Verticordia from start to finish, and the album is very attractive as well! Ariel never fails to deliver simple, elegant music full of peace and beauty in a world where those things are difficult to come by.
