CD reviews 2004, InsideOutMusic Bassus Re-Surrectus Music composed by Bruce Broughton Arnaeus Music 2003 Bass: Arni Egilsson Arni Egilsson has covered tremendous musical ground over these many years including chamber music, then stretching through jazz, orchestral and symphonic work. As well, he has established a huge amount of studio time for motion pictures and television. In visiting his website there are photos from as far back as 1958 with Arni tangling with double bass. With Bassus Re-surrectus, re-released in 2003, we see him in the capacity of double bass soloist for the music of composer Bruce Broughton. This album was originally given to the world in 1977/78, but according to the liner notes of this CD version of the same music, perhaps that same world was not ready for a fuzz-laden, reverb-drenched, mutron-flanged, multi-tracked double bass. Our loss however through this release is now our reward. The style? Progressive music in the truest sense in that it is progressive & actually forward looking, something found virtually nowhere else these days. A wise move on the part of Egilsson for releasing this gem again. Highly recommended for those looking into the future of bass. Not for the navel gazer. Thériault A reissue from 1978, and it sounds like it too. Some of the production elements sound very tied to the time. However, it must be said that this is experimental jazz and is worth a listen for the very fact that it IS innovative. I defy anyone to find a jazz fusion record like this one that sounds half as good or as well played and composed. Good on you for the reissue - the remastering sounds great. Great tunes william jervis ARNI EGILSSON - Bassus Re-Surrectus As a too much grown violin, ARNI EGILSSON's double bass rises from refined instrumental carpet, rendered with wise taste and original acoustic/electric mixing. With the sumptuous intervention of orchestral arrangements, this recording project begins with contemporary funky atmosphere and it's near to end with the expressive power of moving strings and bow. Arni Egilson is a Bass Player of outstanding talent with his unique of using a bow, I do not recall anyone else in Jazz, over the years, who has done this with such good effect, although a few may well have experimented. He was brought to the United States by the late Sir John Barbirolli to play with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. While there, he established an enduring relationship with André Previn. A versatile instrumentalist, equally comfortable in jazz and classical venues, he has recorded a classical solo album with Vladimir Askenazy and a jazz album with Ray Brown. Egilsson is highly regarded as a leading session player in the orchestras of the Los Angeles recording studios serving as Principal Bassplayers for most of Hollywood's top composers. He has been a Professor of Double Bass at California State University, Northridge.
