Bound By Time
A Boston-born preppie bred in the suburbs of London, Ben Broderick is a young singer/songwriter finding his place in the world. Ben is a talented and expressive artist who has the enviable ability to express himself through the lyrical poetry of his songs. Wise beyond his years, Ben's music reflects not only the situation of a the typical American teenager ('45 Second Romance' deals with fleeting glimpses of love on the subway) but the hardships of being a foreigner in his own country; a youth raised abroad in a post 9/11 world of anti-American sentiment (in '36,000 Feet,' he sings about what it's like to live in two places at once). His heartbreaking 'Private First Class' is a true story about a soldier in Iraq who died before his 21st birthday: 'You've taken his life / You don't know his name' he fearlessly tells our leaders. We follow Ben's journey through the defeat of realizing he's not as cool as he once thought in 'Riches to Rags,' the solitude of 'As I Sit Without.' While most teenagers count down the days until their 21st birthday, in 'Bound By Time' Ben attempts to hang on to today as long as he can: 'I don't need another year / Added to my age / I just wanna stay right here.' Such wistfully romantic thoughts are unusual considering he is only 18, a dreamer on the cusp of adulthood and responsibility. Let's hope he never loses his exuberant glow.
