You Did This for Me
Ben Vega began studying piano at the age of five and composing at ten. Since then, he has been involved in performing, arranging, teaching, conducting, and recording. He writes his own music and lyrics, performs the instruments, and synthesizes the sounds. Improvisation is a key part of his live performances. At each concert he takes his audience along with him to new places in the music. Although he works in the Christian pop genre, his music often transcends classification. He is classically trained, but he draws inspiration from various artists such as Stevie Wonder, Queen, Prince, David Bowie, Herbie Hancock, Take 6, and Chic Corea. The interplay of three elements are central in his compositions: melody, vocal harmony, and chordal progression. Deceptively simple melodies hook the listener. What would normally be background vocals are brought forward in the music to act as interdependent solo voices. Complex chordal progressions challenge listeners by taking different paths to get to familiar places. These elements fuse into a unique sound based on his conversations with his Creator and Friend.
