Product Notes

A native of Hungary, with residences in that country and California, flutist Boglárka Kiss has been earning notice for embracing rarely-heard repertoire from around the world. Although well-versed in standard works, she particularly enjoys researching and performing flute music from central and Eastern Europe. In the U.S., Boglárka has been a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. She has been featured on NPR, and appears frequently as a chamber musician and recitalist. She has worked with artists such as acclaimed pianist Robert Edward Thies, cellist Cecilia Tsan, and violinist Henry Gronnier (of the Rossetti Quartet). She performs in several orchestras in California, including the Pasadena Symphony, and appears in orchestras for pops and musical theater projects. True to her commitment to popularizing central European music in this country, Boglárka recently gave the U.S. premiere of Hungarian composer Endre Szervánszky's flute concerto to rave reviews. In 2003, she appeared at the convention of the National Flute Association, where she gave a recital/demonstration entitled "Inspiration in 20th Century Hungarian Flute Music-A Performer's Guide". With her partner in Duo Ondine, harpist Alison Bjorkedal, she has also premiered Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür's Prints in the U.S. and performs regularly throughout California. While in Europe, Boglárka strives to introduce American works not widely known there. In her native Hungary, she frequently appears in recitals and is regularly featured on Hungarian National Radio. She premiered Grammy-winner Billy Childs' Sonata for Flute and Piano (with Robert Edward Thies) in Europe in 2002, and Katherine Hoover's Kokopeli Hungary in 2003. Her eclectic solo debut album Air features the first recording of the Sonata for Flute and Piano by Billy Childs, works by CPE Bach, Toru Takemitsu, Hungarian composers Béla Bartók, István Szelényi, and Endre Szervánszky. Aside from her performing career, Boglárka maintains a commitment to teaching as well. Currently, she is on the faculty of Pasadena City College, maintains a private studio, and is in demand as a master class teacher, music coach, and lecturer. She is professor of flute and artist-in-residence at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. Her former teaching appointments include Folsom Lake College and Cerritos College. Boglárka was born and raised in Hungary where she studied music for 9 years. She holds degrees in economics and flute performance. In 2000, she was a Yamaha prize winner at the Julius Baker International Flute Seminar. Her teachers have included James Newton, Julius Baker, Anne Diener Zentner, and Jim Walker.
