Product Notes

"Love and the Lack Thereof" is the first release from Burt Myers, a collection of smart, catchy, playful songs written between 1998 and 2004. In addition to Myers' various guitars, bass, and drum programming, the CD features the exquisite harmony vocals of Debra Chesman, lovely mandolin and accordion from Tom Quigley, and the studio wizardry (mixing, mastering and a few odd instrumental parts) of Will Russell and Dana Billings. Myers started writing songs in his teens, modeled after the original late-70s punks and, especially, Elvis Costello. He learned to play guitar and continued writing through college and after, expanding his musical palette to include blues, jazz, country, and traditional and contemporary folk. In 1998, he attended his first songwriting camp (at the Omega Institute) and got serious about writing, recording, and performing. He's since become a regular at Summersongs, an extraordinary camp for songwriters near Woodstock, NY, where he's continued developing his writing and performing skills, and polishing the twelve songs on this CD. Tracks include: Love and the Lack Thereof: A song about songwriting, and favorite songwriters. So Like Me: If there are really all these single women out there looking for guys... Only A Fool: An aching ballad about unrequited love at first sight. Allison: Typical male fantasy, you might say. Yes, but in a bowling alley! Might As Well Be You: A random (or not so?) one night stand. My Old Flame: Love for someone who's not ready to settle down. Bound By Blood: Another ballad, a rumination on family and our attempts to escape. Father, Time: A bluesy up-tempo exploration of famiy, again, and death. Ypsilanti Girl: Well, there was this beautiful woman who blew through town... I Win, You Win: Are witty wordplay and catchy folk guitar enough to win the girl? Summer Love Is Easy: A spare ballad about the cold end of an affair. I Believe in You: A hopeful rocker, asserting that the guy will get the girl.
