Product Notes

Coleman Lindberg: Bio the sound: Lindberg's music embodies the genre he calls "street folk"- a biting, melodic blend of folk, punk, pop, hip-hop/soul, and Celtic styles inspired by and emerging from inner-city life. Lindberg's raw, personal songs offer a message of hope and transcendence to society's underdogs-- street kids, GLBT youth, addicts, the abused, and the poor- and have inspired comparisons to artists as diverse as Ani Difranco, Morrissey, David Gray, and Tracy Chapman. With a rich, plaintive voice, primal guitar style, a self- effacing sense of humor and smart, poignant lyrics, Lindberg makes music both intimate and universally accessible. The story: Coleman Lindberg got his start in the music business at age 10 performing his own arrangements of hymns and folk songs at the Methodist church he attended with his mother. Classically trained as a pianist and vocalist, a self-taught guitarist, and valedictorian of the Perpich Center for Arts Education class of 1995, Lindberg left Macalester College in 1997 to pursue the life of a professional musician and drifter. Since then he's survived as a busker and a barista, a wedding singer and a waiter, a secretary and a songwriter. He's released several independent recordings (both as a solo artist and with the queer power-folk duo Winter Machine), contributed tracks to several compilations (appearing alongside such artists as Ani Difranco, Melissa Ferrick, and Pansy Division), and performed both nationally and abroad. Following a 2-year hiatus from performing, Lindberg returned to the stage and studio in 2005. Recent months have found him tirelessly gigging throughout the Twin Cities region in anticipation of "Making My Name," his new solo EP. Releases: "Making My Name" (EP, 2006), "A Few Things I Believe" (full-length with Winter Machine, 2002), "Boys" (full-length, 2000), "The 6 and 8-Song Demos" (1997,1998),"GroundUp Mpls. Vols. 1 and 2" (compilations, 2005), "Queerstock: Queer Soup" (compilation, 2003), "Acoustic Revolution" (compilation, 2000), "SAPulation Vol.1" (compilation,1998). performances: Coleman Lindberg has played dozens of local, regional, and national venues over the years including First Avenue/7th Street Entry, The Fine Line, The Cedar Cultural Center, The 400 Bar, The Triple Rock, The Walker Art Center, Intermedia Arts, The Bryant-Lake Bowl, Patrick's Cabaret, The Terminal Bar, The Dinkytowner, The Hexagon Bar, The Whole, Ginkgo, The Gay 90's, Twin Cities Pride, The Mayday Festival, District 202, Acadia Cafe, National Night Out, Stevens Square Movies/Music in the Park, Take Back the Night, The Suburban World, Jitters, the Weissman Art Museum, Macalester College, Carlton College, the University of Minnesota, Eclipse Records, the Foxfire, Sursumcorda, Babylon/Gus Lucky's, the Seward Cafe, the Bedlam Theater, The Smell (LA), 924 Gillman (Berkeley), Meow Mix (Manhattan), Sidewalk (Manhattan), DUMBA (Brooklyn), The Mr. Roboto Project (Pittsburgh), Fire and Water (Northampton, MA), and many others. Lindberg has shared the stage with and/or opened for All the Pretty Horses, Desdamona, Heiruspecs, Har Mar Superstar/Sean Na Na, Alix Olson, Omaur Bliss, Truth Maze, Ellis, the Moldy Peaches, The Winter Blanket, Doria Roberts, Pamela Means, Tulip Sweet, Gina Young, and Lisa Jackson, to name a few. He's appeared multiple times on KFAI and WMCN and has received airplay and/or mention on RadioK, the Current, and a growing list of internet radio outlets. Buzz: 'Coleman Lindberg's emotional new CD 'Making My Name' recalls Patty Griffin and Glen Phillips.' -Chris Reimenschneider, The Star Tribune "Lindberg's wistful, guy-and-his-guitar confessions are beautifully crafted, one part poignant and one part funny." -Michelle Lee, Pulse of the Twin Cities "Coleman has a beautiful energy and a beautiful voice." -Venus (of All The Pretty Horses) "Coleman Lindberg is one-of-a-kind. Give him five minutes and he'll take you on a soul-sharing, world-bearing journey. Give him an hour and he'll folksing his way into your heart." -Alix Olson, acclaimed performance poet "A politically aware folk-punker..." -Celeste Tabora, Pulse of The Twin Cities "octave-spanning, Beck-like vocals...' -James Beach, Lavender Magazine "Intelligent and accessible...a must-see live." -Sarah Harris, former artistic director of Patrick's Cabaret "A great voice and sincere lyrics...a superb songwriter and musician." -David Hill, the Whole Music Club "Warm-sounding folk-punk...brisk, catchy tunes and soaring harmonies." -The Duluth Weekly Reader "This is 'punk-folk'...Coleman Lindberg attacks the media hype of junk-food-journalism, belting out 'I don't give a shit about Monica Lewinsky/I'm just happy that she got laid.'" -Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide (from review of Acoustic Revolution compilation)
