The idea behind this project was to highlight the contrasting voices and concepts of the saxophone soloists of the group. Today the individual sound of the musicians often hides in the shadow of their larger stylistic and conceptual outlooks. Hopefully the program on this record will make it possible to compare the creative efforts of these players to foregone masters that have served as an inspiration to shape their own personal voices on their instruments. - AMK When this CD first hit my player a short while back, I was duly impressed by the high level of musicianship in evidence from the first note. And this music truly is impressive. I began playing it for my musician friends here in the Seattle area to get their perspectives. One in particular, whose opinion I value, made the comment: 'Those musicians from Finland are making a strong contribution to the African-American musical tradition'. At first I found his comment paradoxical, but because he happens to be both a talented guitarist and African-American, I pondered it further. Ultimately I have come to agree with him. We have reached a point in the development of the jazz idiom where great contributions are coming from musicians from across the globe, and this group, Contrasts, is a strong case in point.
