Product Notes

'Songs by Lithuanian Composers' is a collaboration between two musicians, mezzo-soprano Danute Mileika and pianist Edmund Saulius Cibas, who have performed together and separately in the United States and Europe. A compilation of 20 songs, it demonstrates a wonderful variety of styles, from simple to classical and contemporary art songs. Many of the songs are about love: a girl makes a wreath of flowers and leaves it in the road for her imaginary lover to find; two lovers enjoy a spring day; and a stranger on horseback seduces and betrays a girl named Ulijana. The songs explore a great range of emotion, from the pleasures of anticipation to the despair of a broken heart. The songs are sung in Lithuanian. The enclosed 20-page booklet includes the texts of the songs along with English translations and an essay about the composers. 'Songs by Lithuanian Composers' is an enjoyable introduction to Lithuanian music and culture for music-lovers of all nationalities. Danute Mileika's voice has been critically described as: 'Her unforced, full-bodied voice easily negotiated the highs and lows...' Lloyd Schwartz, Boston Pheonix Danute Mileika brought assurance to Adalgisa with full, attractive tone... Jeffrey C. Smith, Opera News Her voice was solid, sizable, secure, and colorful over the wide range... Richard Dyer, The Boston Globe DANUTE MILEIKA made her operatic debut as Maddalena in Verdi's ' Rigoletto', she has demonstrated her versatility in a wide variety of parts, Mrs. Page in 'The Merry Wives of Windsor', La Zia Principessa in 'Suor Angelica', and La Ciesca in 'Gianni Schicchi' in her native Lithuania, where she began her vocal and operatic studies. She won prizes in singing competitions in Latvia and Lithuania before moving to Boston, when she was twice chosen as a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Regional auditions, as well as in the Classical Productions Vocal Competition, which featured her in a concert in New York's Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. She was soon in demand with opera companies in the Boston area. Her major roles have included Ulrica in 'Un Ballo in Maschera' with the Boston Academy of Music, as well as Amneris in 'Aida', Adalgisa in 'Norma', and Lola in 'Cavalleria Rusticana' with the Boston Bel Canto Opera Company. She also has sung with the Commonwealth Opera and Ocean State Lyric Opera. Danute Mileika has been a featured soloist with oratorio societies in Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles in works such as Verdi's 'Requiem', the Stabat Mater' of both Pergolesi and Rossini, Vivaldi's 'Gloria', Mozart's 'Coronation Mass', Haydn's 'Lord Nelson Mass' and 'Paukenmesse', Durufle 'Requiem', and Respighi's 'Laud to the Nativity'. She has sung on WGBH radio in Boston and is in frequent demand for recital appearances, both in the U.S. and Lithuania.
