This is not your typical Christmas recording. The first Christmas release by singer/songwriter Dave Hall, the CD does contain a few old favorites, but most of the songs are little known and rarely recorded folk carols. The traditional songs on the CD are mostly American ones, some from the Appalachian region, a couple are African-American in origin. But all the songs take a deep, even melancholy look at the holiday. 'Santa Claus Blues' comes from a prison in Texas and captures the loneliness some people feel at Christmas, and 'It Was Poor Little Jesus' tells the story of Jesus's life from a slaves perspective. And there is one original song 'Christmas in Vermont'. Dave, who's family has been in Vermont for over two hundred years, evokes the quiet warmth of a winter Christmas Eve in his family's home state. This CD captures the joy and hope, but also the bittersweet quality of the Christmas season.
