Iranian Chronicles is a collection of film scores I composed for the films of Hamid Rahmanian and Melissa Hibbard. Spanning eight years of an inspiring friendship, these scores were conceived and recorded through an intimate and exciting process of experimentation. My intention was that the exploration of unusual instrumentation and the creation of unique sonic landscapes would reflect and convey an elemental relationship between music and images, themes and plots, instruments and characters. And though each of these films contains an artful cinematic depiction of Iranian themes, I deliberately refrained from borrowing from a rich Persian musical heritage, opting instead for ethnic ambiguity. Thus in this album it is the Chronicles which are Iranian, not the music. Conceived around dinner tables and written between bouts of impassioned debates, these scores were recorded while living together during weeks of production, making this one of my favorite memories of creative collaboration to date. My deepest gratitude goes to Hamid and Melissa for their friendship and creative vision as well as to my wife Lesa for her unending source of inspiration and love.
