Roots Go Deep
On my website you'll find information about music I've written and recorded, some by myself, some with the help of my dear friends; some are recent, some are decades old; some may hold some interest for you, some may be meaningful only to a very few people. Such is the nature of art, I guess. I've been playing guitar since 1966, sometimes intensely and sometimes not. I've also been writing music since about that same time, and there are hundreds of tunes and fragments laying around my place - musical 'sketches' you might call them. I started picking up some experience at keyboards and woodwinds in the 70s (played flute on those Jethro Tull covers), and diversified my stringed instruments in the 90s. More recently, my Mac has been my intrument for a lot of composition and accompaniment. My musical interests are very eclectic - from Hank Williams to Vaughn Williams, you might say. I'm not too crazy about opera, I shudder when disco comes on the radio, and very little rap/hip-hop impresses me, but when the big bands or the folk bands or the hair bands or the ceilidh bands start in, I turn it up! My 'desert island discs' will give you an idea of my most precious audio entertainment. ('Desert island discs' are those top-ten that you'd want with you if you were stranded on a desert island with a solar-powered iPod with only room for ten albums.) My favorites from my 2,500-plus collection are (not in order of importance): Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - 'So Far' Cat Stevens - 'Tea for the Tillerman' America - 'History' Eagles - 'Hell Freezes Over' Alan Parsons - 'Greatest Hits' Queen - 'Greatest Hits' John Williams - 'Star Wars Trilogy' Vaughn Williams - 'Airs and Variations' Simon & Garfunkle - 'Bookends' The Chieftains - 'Long, Long Road' Led Zepplin - 'Greatest Hits' Jethro Tull - 'Heavy Horses' OK, so I can't cut it down to just ten. In fact, the list hasn't room for Bella Fleck or Danny Elfman or Beatles or Sons of the Pioneers or Rosemary Clooney or Yes or Sondheim or Allison Krouse or Pink Floyd or Sebelius or Ricky Skaggs or Brian Setzer or Jonatha Brooks or Bing Crosby or Manheim Steamroller or Alexander Courage or Dan Fogelburg or Mozart or k.d.lang or Gershwin or Pearl Jam or Don Williams or Jerome Kern or Kitaro or Stan Rogers or Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks or... 'So much music, so little time.'
