Thread to the Torn
Deal by Dusk is a collection of musicians that have organically evolved from the seed of their shared musical passion. Blending diverse musical backgrounds into a unique soundscape, their collective styles have helped to unify and galvanize their engaging sound. Deal by Dusk list the Smiths, the Grateful Dead, the Flaming Lips, the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, the Cure, the Doors, Waterdeep, Dave Matthews, Built to Spill, and Phish among their wide array of influences. Often when diverse musical styles collide the result can sound scattered and frayed, yet in allowing this creation to grow naturally, these gentlemen have produced something unique and powerfully focused. It is a music that aims to shake the body, and touch the soul. 'thread to the torn' is Deal by Dusk's first full length album. Following up their 2005 'Headlights' EP which garnered kudos and healthy sales both domestically and abroad, the Los Angeles based trio went into this recording hoping to capture not just the essence of the songs, but the joy and affection that went into the writing of them. Dan Kaulahao's voice is both powerful and intimate - unique in it's influence and execution. Dan also lays down guitar that is at times submerged and gentle, and at others dancing and raging. Jared Rushton plays the organs, synths, and bass with taste that hints at his spectrum of inspirations, and a loving skill that ends up at a style that is uniquely his. The whole train is driven by Ryan Rushton, who's fire and commitment to drumming heats up every track. Deal by Dusk ultimately let the project dictate the direction and tone of this recording, leading to an album that drops down heavy, and still floats through it's story telling path in delicate colors. The resulting journey-on-disc is one they now humbly invite you to share.
