Broken Hearts Are Open Hearts
Live recording is all 'God Bless You' and 'Good Luck!' We pretty much got full measure of both that night at West Hills Friends. We had been working together as a five, six, seven piece for a couple of years at this point, playing some prisons, doing fundraisers, some events for the denomination... ...we got together for potluck and talked about what next. Well, I always want to record, because I make up the songs, and it's all organic singer/songwriter ear musicianship; so I know if the songs don't get recorded they're probably gone. What I didn't really get until it was all over was how rare and beautiful a thing it is to have a group of people - a big group - who like to make music together. So much worked for us in those days. The different bright talents people brought. Listen to Jill and Aaron do 'Make Straight The Ways.' It still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. The way April grabs ahold of those blues scales in 'Dig Deep Shake Down Blues', and 'Good King David'. So strong. The way the gospel train runs away with the whole room when we segue out of the peace and quiet of 'Peace of God' into the barnnburner encore 'Good King David'. These aren't perfect recordings by a long shot. But they are all good songs, and there are some real jewels recorded here, and what a great evening we all had. Enjoy!
