THERAPEUTIC RESPONSES: A SOOTHING LULLABY FOR PEOPLE IN PAIN: Evelyn Heldenbrand was 92 years old, with no surviving family members. She was diagnosed with osteoarthritis, depression, and had a colostomy. She experienced times of severe pain while living in the convalescent hospital. Her nurses were at a loss as to how to help her. 'HEAVENLY ASSURANCE' is a tape she used to enjoy listening to at any time, but especially when she was in pain. She used to play 'Abide With Me' on the piano to her mother when she was a little girl. Whenever she heard this song, she would immediately stop crying in pain and start singing along with the music. She was usually sound asleep by the fourth song on this tape - every time! Review from National Association of Activity Professionals: This tape is 'a meditative presentation of scriptural promises of eternal life through prayer and song'. Diana beautifully plays a selection of ten popular hymns on her autoharp while gently and serenely singing. Her music soothed and calmed our residents whose faith has been an important part of their life. Playing the tape on an individual basis, e.g., in their room or in a quiet area, provided the resident with the privacy to be with his/her own thoughts, and was found to be more efective. 'HEAVENLY ASSURANCE' is suitable for any level of functioning, from comatose to the highest level, based upon the individual's prior history. This resource is unlike other tapes of hymns in that it includes narratives of scriptural promises which seem to help the resident focus on the meanings of the hymns. Based upon the individual's background, this tape can provide comfort, reassurance, and feelings of peace, especially for those who are seriously ill.' 'Diana's tape, 'HEAVENLY ASSURANCE', is very therapeutic and relaxing for the patients. They ask to hear it again and again in their rooms. Her music soothes the patients.' - Susan Jentift, Activity Director, Brighton Place, Spring Valley, CA Dawn Rudluff, Activity Director at Lemon Grove Convalescent Hospital shares: 'I grew very close to one of our patients who was dying. When she slipped into a coma, I went to her bedside and held her hand, and told her about Diana's tape, 'HEAVENLY ASSURANCE'. I told her, 'If I knew how to tell you what is in my heart I would, but I don't know how to express what I feel for you. I have a tape I am going to play for you that says everything I want to share with you'. The patient died within 24 hours, but in her death process, she heard beautiful music and scriptural promises about her future home in heaven. Betty Murphy, Activity Director at Stanford Court, La Mesa, CA, comments: The patients love her tape. I played 'HEAVENLY ASSURANCE' bedside for a patient who was in a coma. There were four family members in the room. They shared with me the next day how much they appreciated hearing the tape - the message of a heavenly home really blessed them and comforted them in their grieving process'. Double Masectomy Patient comments: 'Diana, you have no idea how much your music helped me through this operation. I requested that the surgeon have it playing when they sedated me, and also that I wanted to wake up hearing it as well. Hearing those hymn and your prayers helped me so much. Thank you for making HEAVENLY ASSSURANCE! Comfort for Grieving Family Members: Dolores had lost seven persons in her family through sudden deaths in an eight-month period. She was emotionally numb - unable to feel anything. After hearing 'HEAVENLY ASSURANCE' she shared: 'When Diana says the prayers about a home in heaven, you have no doubt there is a heaven! It has really helped me to release my loved ones. Everyone who is in the grief process should have one of these tapes.'
