Doc Ramone & Corduroy Kid Present Dirty Bottom
DIRTY BOTTOM! Founding members Langston 'Doc' Ramone and Shawn 'Corduroy Kid' Hall, conceived of the project while playing in the Discovery Coast Festival in Bella Coola 2005 with Apollo 5. The concept of 'Dirty Bottom' is to represent the Low-end theory and rootical riddims of the southern hemisphere. They called on Vancouver's rhythmic wizard and long-time OldSOFA all-star Brennan 'ahh you guys' Saul to hit the traps for a week of off the floor sessions at Eastvan's legendary Profile Studios. The trio recorded the beds live from March 7-10 2006, and all the overdubs and additional sessions were recorded at OldSOFA and Topspin studios in Vancouver B.C. The vibe of the album, King Tubby meets Blue Note at an East-Vancouver BBQ with celebrity chef James Brown. Late one Thursday night...really late... The Doc on trumpet and Corduroy on harmonica riffs started to fly over playback through the talkback mic. This created a template for a call and response playfullness that embodies the entire album. All the background vocals were captured on one mic, one take hard panned Motown/I-Threes style by the Dity Bottom choir. Coming from both geographical and musically divergent backgrounds Langston Bella Coola 'Reggae', Brennan Vancouver'Big-band jazz', and Shawn Toronto 'Soul' meant that these cats had a wide pallete for musical guests. These artists include Kilo-Cee on decks, Serwan Yamolky on the oud, Chad Makela on baritone sax and Edan Armstrong on percussion. Singers ranged from the animated antics of Mike Ackhurst, suggestive themes of Bianca Carli, and collaborative poetry of Laura Crema and Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm. Dirty Bottoms available for weddings and funerals.
