Product Notes

'Choices' introduces you to the Songs of Edward Dee, a son of San Francisco and singer/songwriter and guitarist who studied, jammed and gigged with many of the best of the SF music scene since the 60's. About the songs... 1. Can I, Do You This song was rhythm-inspired at first - a hip, offbeat, reggae groove - and became a good vehicle for that feeling when you can't get someone special off your mind and... you're also imagining what could be going on with them. 2. Samba Dee You know how it is when you meet your child for the first time? I wrote this song over 30 years ago when my daughter, Stacey, was born. I wanted to name her Samba so that, whatever she did in life, she would be... SambaDee. 3. My God An inspiring prayer of awakening and gratitude for life and relationship with God. This song was inspired and written in the car during one of those conversations with that thing that is bigger than all of us and allows all things. A strong, biting reggae beat underpins this song. 4. Better Not Bitter How do you respond when a relationship is ending? Who will you choose to be? I was wanting to let go and be different in how I perceived the end of a relationship when these words came. 5. Is A Time Captures the mix of deep feelings in the loss of a life partner and longtime relationship, knowing the pain will someday change, and celebrating the love and life of someone very dear. I wrote this song for Paul McCartney on the morning that I heard Linda McCartney had passed away. I was feeling his loss. 6. Kiss You Simply said... Kiss You is a sweet little love song. Nice for expressing your love for your sweetheart on Valentine's Day, your wedding day, anniversary... on any day! Ironically enough, I wrote this song when I was angry and frustrated, lying back on my bed with my guitar in hand. This completely different emotion came out of nowhere and this sweet song emerged. 7. Know Me Again When you are changing and becoming more of who you are, and... you're in a relationship, this song asks the question...Are you willing to see the other person with new eyes? Would you like to get to know me again??? 8. Walk With Me A song of remembering that we are never alone... and that we can always ask for divine company to 'walk with me,' no matter what life throws our way. A gospel feel and infectious beat is what I wanted for this song celebrating the power of having a personal relationship with God. 9. Water's Edge A love song speaking to physical distance and the longing heart it can bring. 10. Island Indigo Ever felt really alone and isolated? This song reflects on my feeling of being alone - a man isolated, sad and having the blues. 11. One of Those Days A story is told here of resigning yourself to a hard day in the life of a relationship and realizing that you have no real control over it. 12. Be Around An inspiring and empowering song that asks us, as human beings, to look around, be aware and be present to where we can make a difference in this circus we call Life. I love the rhythm, too! 13. Dancing Tree The spirit of life is present in all things. This is a wake-up-and-smell-the-roses (or coffee!) song. Having coffee on my front porch one morning, the wind off the coast had the tall eucalyptus tree dancing wonderfully. The image awakened me and called to remind me to stop... look... and listen... and connect to the great all that is. Musically, this CD features the recognizable style of Edward Dee's guitar soloing licks, especially his unique attack with the acoustic guitar. Many of the tracks on this album feature the musical genius of percussionist and accomplished 4-mallet marimba player, Julia Harrell. Listen for the unique use of the marimba as a pop, blues, rock and jazz instrument, adding brightness and an always contagious rhythm that invites you to stand up and move to the music. ----------------------------- CD review by CoastViews Magazine, November, 2001.... A Collection of Experiences in Song Edward Dee is another of the new generation of performing songwriters reaching out to you in a direct and multi-musical way. His new CD, entitled 'Choices', highlights his creative blend of world-influenced Pop and A3 styles. Building upon his musical and songwriting influences of Sting, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon and Jimmy Buffet, Edward Dee brings forth that familiar melody line and simple repetition of rhythm that these others are known for with an undeviating vocal style that is clear and inviting. He's backed up on 'Choices' by Julia Harrell who Dee describes as 'my partner in musical crime, the Yin to my Yang, the veggies to my meat, the kayak to my cigars, and my friend.' Her expert marimba playing adds a unique depth to the music, and she's right there with the percussion support. Choices is a collection of love songs, a quest for understanding one's place in the grander scheme of things, and an invitation to have 'personal ownership of your feelings.' Songs, such as Be Around', focus on what each person can do to be a part of others' lives and how to make life more full and beneficial. The song, 'Is A Time', reflects upon the loss of a loved one through remembering what was good in the time we shared with them. Still other songs, like 'Dancing Tree', give you an insight into Edward as he points out the simple experiences in life we quickly overlook. 'A gospel feel is what I wanted for this song celebrating the power of having a relationship with God,' says Dee. And a gospel feel is what he achieved with 'Walk With Me.' This is definitely a track which compels you to dance. 'Water's Edge' is a love song speaking to physical distance and the longing it can bring. It's an example of the simple and heart-felt that lyrics Dee writes. 'I've been bold You've been told How I'd hold you near Call you my dear Banish the fear for today. From the high ridge to the water's edge I will bring you what I've got to give From the high ridge to the water's edge come and bring me all you've got to give From the high ridge to the water's edge.' 'Choices' is a perfect title for a CD which asks you to ponder such questions - whether it's in what we can do to make the world around us better, in reflecting on a way to be during a time of loss, or whether or not we can stop to recognize what the world around us is trying to tell us. Edward Dee presents it... The choice is yours regarding what to do with it. -----------------------------.
