Beak to Bark
Elise Witek is a singer/songwriter whose melodic landscapes stretch from the borders of her global experience. Born in 1987 to a New England autumn, Elise soon discovered a new world with a guitar in her tiny hands. A performer at heart, she began composing simple songs before most of her peers were old enough to ride a bicycle. While she wove her melodies through adolescence and beyond, it wouldn't be long until she'd find the tapestry of Europe as her muse. Elise unexpectedly found herself penning down her teenage years in songbooks in both Germany and Portugal. There she'd compose music to match the elusive rhythm of life between languages until being welcomed as a student at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. Now planted on the West coast, her formidable talent as a guitarist has earned her the invitation to perform as far east as Lithuania, even as a full-time student. While finishing her degree in English, it is no surprise that both modern poets and ancient prophets have walked their way into her lyrics. Her song-writing is no less reminiscent of her own experience than it is of the psalms and the words of Jesus. Yet a young artist, Elise possesses an unpretentious vocal maturity that supports a vibrant honesty towards life. She represents a new generation of singer-songwriters who sing the world as they see it, wondering what "home" really means. Her profoundly evocative melodies pull on the strings of hope, while lesser banners are torn down.
