Product Notes

The Band's Album, 'Tranquilizers, Brain Screwdrivers and a Book Full of Cheery Poems,' recorded and produced by band guitar player and multi-instrumentalist Dustin Ragland in his Duplexio studio in Mesta Park and mixed by Trent Bell at his Norman studio, 'Tranquilizers' is anything but mind-numbing, and contains 12 woderfully written and performed songs that are as melancholy as they are cautiously triumphant. TRACKS Many of the tracks, like 'Your Eyes Are Brighter than the Sun' and 'Going Places Unknown' almost sound like electrified folk songs. Think The Kinks Ray Davies fronting the Postal Service. Deftly added textures and layers permeate songs like 'Remedies Solutions' and 'Hollow' - a mournful anthem about the crush of potential loss and the stark colors of empty aloneness it makes you see everywhere. Glitchy, electronic drum sounds punctuate as Walker's soulful, morose voice rides the churning digital wash in the vulnerable 'I Was Robbed,' among the Best on the record. SHOW 'Tranquilizers' is amazing. It's's actually mind-boggling to conceive of an album this perfect - frm songwriting, lyrics and music to the precise, transparent production Polish - being self-produced and directed, echoing from a pretty unassuming group of Oklahoma City Musicians - Joe Wertz - Oklahoma Gazette 'Emelo' is a fictional character we created... he is a little magical bean that is a bit clumbsy with his powers, not to mention hard of hearing... he is in a constant battle with 'bird'... his arch and evil nemesis... who is the self proclaimed overlord of the Velonian Empire... he is more interested in reaking havok and enjoying pestering 'Emelo' than anything else... each song traces through part of the life of 'Emelo' 'turn the lights out in the sky' refers to his childhood... in which he constantly denies his magical powers and running from his family and professors who only want to help... 'your eyes are brighter than the sun' refers to his live as a homeless magical bean, traveling the streets and sleeping on sidewalks... this is where bird discovers that he is 'Emelo' one of the last remaining magical beans... bird imediately begins to create hardships for 'Emelo', setting up various traps for him to fall in and situations in which he could be destroyed.. this is how he lost his hearing... 'march 26th on the bottom floor' refers his journey out of the homeless life into his true destiny... after a series of trials involving self help groups and consultations involving 'bird' and his army desguised as helpful pillow people... and so on and so forth... contact me for further details on the live of 'Emelo' The Band and Sound: Indie Pop, thoughtful lyrics with musical moments that grab your leg and won't let go. most of us in the band have played together for 5 years or more... in many different contexts... we recorded these goodies at Duplexio Studios, Mesta Park, OK Produced and Engineered by Dustin Ragland Mixed by Trent Bell, Bell Labs Norman, OK (guitarist for the Chainsaw Kittens) Mastering by Garrett Haines, Treelady Studios, Turtle Creek, PA.
