Live & Kicking
Extra Stout is a traditional Irish band that has been in existence, in one form or another, for close to fifteen years. Members of the band have played all over the Northeast and the Midwest. They have expertise in musicianship and in Irish culture The hallmark of the band is variety--variety in the music played; in the instrumentation and in the talents of the individuals in the band. More than any other currently active band, Extra Stout plays the full gamut of Irish music: dance tunes; slow airs; marches; composed music; ballads; drinking songs; rebel songs; sean nos; chanteys, Irish punk, etc., etc. In direct contrast with bands that focus endlessly on one small niche within the music, Extra Stout does it all. Moreover, the variety in the band's choice of material is but a pale reflection of the variety of the musicians. Mary Barron plays many of our leads on the fiddle but also sings, plays the guitar and brings with her a strong interest in the music of Scotland. Marcos Levy plays anything with strings--especially the guitar and mandolin and does vocals. Sandy Duling is our expert on the flutes and whistles. Bob Smith plays a great concertina and is our long standing chanteyman. Helen Mango is our lead vocalist and plays the bodhran and the guitar. Paul Cohen backs us up on rhythm guitar. And Pat Max does bodhran, guitar, vocals and whistle and writes and lectures on Irish culture. Occasionally we add a timpan, and our sound guy is Jonathan Czar. Extra Stout is a one band Irish festival.
