Fishstick, whose tax forms identify him as Scott Ratinoff, delivers an eclectic blend of folk, rock, punk, and country stomp in his live performances. His sound has been compared to a range of artists from mid-period Wilco and early-era Pavement to Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, and Beck. On The Apartment, Ratinoff teamed up with producers Mike Lawson and Matt Teacher to record the album at Sine Studio. The studio, which has emerged as the nexus of the burgeoning South Philly songwriter scene, has recently recorded local luminaries The Sleepwells, Corato, Doug Lee, The Discount Heroes, and Dani Mari. The Apartment was mastered by Grammy-Award winner Phil Nicolo at Studio 4 Recording in Conshohocken. Nicolo, one half of the famed Butcher Brothers, has worked with an amazing array of artists, including John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Amy Grant, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Santana, Pete Yorn, Luscious Jackson, Urge Overkill, the Pretenders, Jon Bon Jovi, and Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam. Fishstick's 1995 album, King on Guitar, was released on the legendary Shrimper label, which also released the very first records by The Mountain Goats, and later released Lou Barlow (Sebadoh), Franklin Bruno, Refrigerator, Simon Joyner and Dump (side project of Yo La Tengo bass player James McNew).
