Space & Material
Raised in the dusty Midwest with a blues heart and a folk head, Fly Away Sparrow - the guise of singer/songwriter Darin Kaihoi - has recorded his first album, a collection of honest and aching songs backed by a talented group of friends, entitled "Space and Material". Influenced heavily by sixties era Dylan, Fly Away Sparrow's music thoughtfully treads deep lyrical ground, showcasing a uniquely poetic voice. Brought to life with lively arrangements and organic sensibilities, Fly Away Sparrow's sound calls to mind that of Neil Young, Wilco, and M. Ward. "Space And Material" was recorded live over a gray and icy weekend mid-January in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The album, featuring eight original songs all written by Kaihoi, impressively moves from stripped down acoustic questions on "Negotiate The Gray", to catchy, high energy folk meditation on "Emancipate Me", to poetic intercession on "Ocean To Land". The songs are at their finest with earthy harmonica, slide guitar, and rich harmonies. The album grows with each listen, leaving an indelible impression on the listener.
