We the People
Sitting in a song circle at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival at 4 a.m. I decided to try out a new song called 'Killing Machine.' I pulled out the crumpled, second-draft of the lyrics and my friend Todd held the flashlight so I could see. I sang the song and someone across the circle said 'you need to record that song and release it NOW, before the election.' I of course immediately thought of all the reasons I couldn't do it for the election but decided instead of listening to the negative voices in my head, to put it out there for my fans and friends and see if there was any interest in hearing these songs of social commentary. The reply I received was astounding. People offered money, studio time, equipment, ideas, and encouragement. So I figured they had decided for me. At that moment I thought of how frustrated I had been from thinking there was nothing I could do to change the state of things in the country and reallized it was my responsibility to put these songs out there NOW simply because I had used my GIFT and written them. As a certain public official likes to say, make no mistake about it. These songs and my voice are a GIFT. So together we will raise some money for where it is desperately needed right now, and hopefully these songs will get us all a little bit madder but also a little bit more hopefull because WE ARE THE PEOPLE and even when it seems pointless we have to keep trying, if only for the sake of knowing we tried and having our children see we tried. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this CD will be donated to humanitarian aid organizations working in Iraq and other war-torn places.
