Product Notes

Girls' Night On! Live at Makor Get It While It's Hot! Girls' Night On is proud to announce the arrival of our new CD, "Live at Makor." Recorded live at one of our open mike nights, the CD is the perfect way to re-live the Girls' Night On experience, or to find out what it's all about. Girls' Night On artists are producing a new and hip kind of Jewish music that appeals to women of all ages and backgrounds. The women whose performances are included on the CD are talented, up-and-coming musicians who, under the existing norms of the Jewish music industry, would likely not have a way of creating a presence for themselves as artists. The CD will enable them to be introduced to both the recording industry and to a wider audience of women. Order a copy of the CD and help support Jewish women who rock! About the Artists: Jane Babits Whirling Jane is a native New Yorker. She loves to sing, play the guitar, write songs and teach music. Some influences are Bonnie Raitt, Nina Simone and Cole Porter. Look for Jane's CD (The Ones I Hold So Dear) on CDBaby.com/JaneBabits. Chava Jewish Mother Blues Chava was born yesterday, lives today, and you'll hear about her tomorrow. Sarah Cohen Chalom (Capture the Dream) Sarah Cohen has been playing guitar since she was 12, and she's still lovin' it. Adena Firstman Darbuka Drumbeats Adena has always been playing drums - but never on a real set. She'd usually play at any desk or table she could get her hands on, until her uncle got her an electronic drum set for her birthday, which she traded in for latin percussion... which eventually led to playing the djembe and darbuka. Adena's mother believes that the drumming is due to her Morroccan roots. Rebecca Fishman Refaenu Leslie Ginsparg Aidel at Heart Leslie Ginsparg is the founder and director of Girls' Night On. She was inspired to pick up the guitar after going to a women's open mike night in Israel and started singing/songwriting a few years after that. Leslie lives and works in Manhattan, the city that, like herself, doesn't sleep. In her other life, she's both a college history professor and a graduate student working on her doctoral dissertation. Rachel Kohl Suddenly Single Although she has sung in many venues, Rachel still prefers singing in the shower to anything else. She served as musical director of her college a cappella group (Boston University's Kol Echad), was a member of the Zamir Chorale of Boson, and performed at numerous women's open mic nights in Jerusalem. She recently directed her first musical, Wizard With a Twist, at the Heschel High School in Manhattan. Despite her musical and theatrical success, she hasn't quit her day job; as a student in the Scholars Circle at the Drisha Institute, Rachel studies Talmud for a living. When she's not learning or teaching Torah, she's doing yoga or working with teens at Camp Nesher. Look for her debut album in 2008 in stores and showers near you. Naomi Less Spread Your Love Naomi Less hails from Chicago, studied classical voice at Northwestern University, and learned to play guitar through her Indigo Girls CDs. She is the lead singer of Less Nessman, a female-fronted blues rock band based in NYC. Less Nessman has performed shows throughout New York City at venues including The Knitting Factory, Canal Room, The Cutting Room, Lion's Den, Kenny's Castaways, and CBGB's Gallery, and recently played in Chicago at Abbey Pub, Elbo Room, and Goose Island. For more info, check out lessnessman.com. Jenny Sassoon Niggun Neshama/Yerushalayim Harim Saviv La Jenny Sassoon is a native of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY. She received her first toy drum when she was five years old and picked drumming up again after college. She plays the dumbek, djembe and bongo drums. Jenny is a certified social worker and works part-time for the Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York. She is a full-time mother of two children. She is married to Robbie Sassoon and lives in Riverdale, NY with her family. Suffy Figure It Out Dahlia Topolosky Niggun Neshama/Yerushalayim Harim Saviv La Dahlia has loved singing and music since she was young, frequently performing in choirs and plays throughout her childhood. In college, she sang in a Columbia a capella group for 3 years singing both Jewish and secular music. In the past 7 years, using her guitar, darbuka, and voice, she has focused more on bringing together and inspiring women with soulful music and Torah. Most recently, along with her friend Jenny Sassoon, Dahlia started Kol Nearim, a music/movement appreciation class for children 0-3, using Israeli and Jewish soul music. Dahlia has also completed her doctorate in clinical psychology and is the school psychologist at the Horace Mann Lower School, where she often uses music in her work. Dahlia lives in Riverdale with her husband, Rabbi Uri, and sons Elyon and Itai. Rachel Leia Weinberger Darbuka Drumbeats Born and raised in Brazil, Rachel started learning the keyboard at the age of 10. By the time she was 14, Rachel decided to follow in her mother's footsteps and took on the drums as well. Throughout the years, she has developed an appreciation for many different styles of music, varying from classical to hard rock to the native Brazillian samba. Other than playing music, Rachel likes to spend time going out with friends, rollerblading and occasionally studying. She is currently majoring in marketing at Lander College for Women.
