If You Love the Name
Blessings to you. My name is Doug Life, until the Lord gives me my new name. I look forward to being with Him and desire for all to know Him. That is the purpose of this music, for as many as possible to be touched in the spirit by the lyrics and delighted in the soul by these songs. I became a born again Christian in 1993, at age 40. The day I publicly testified of my conversion I wrote my first song (4 verses in 20 minutes) on the way home from church. One of the songs on this album was also written that same month. I have always played music, piano mostly, bass fiddle in school and some guitar as an adult. I have played and have been exposed to many types of music throughout my life. My influences come from ragtime, older jazz, Dixieland, big band, classical and rock. I had always struggled with playing "written" music; I think a better memory would have helped! When I started playing in church I had to learn to play chords, which along with my song writing, taught me a new side to music. Now, when I play, the effort does not interfere with the music...it is joyful to play unto the Lord. "Echoes" should be the title of this paragraph. When my sister heard this song it reminded her of our grandmother, It is assumed, by the believers, in my family that if you are a born again Christian it is because of the prayers of our grandmother. This introduces the ministry part of my conversion. I am a prayer. I was lead early in my walk to pray for others and was fortunate enough to see the results. I work with my hands and have many hours to pray. I believe that the music I present to you would have no depth if it were not for prayer and my time in the bible. Four evenings each week, I teach piano in my music studio. Like all things, teaching the basics has made me understand my craft, of song writing, better. I average about 15 students and I teach traditional music reading. The more advanced students learn chord structure and use. Over the past 14 years I have written over 50 songs. In the fall of 2006 one of my students was encouraging me to do something with my songs. I said to her that I would be sitting (in this gray chair) when the Lord was ready for me to present my music. Within a few weeks, Jon Goodspeed walked into my studio and offered to sing if I wanted to record an album. Jon and his wife had brought their 2 sons to lessons for years, so I was surprised to receive the offer. I had heard Jon sing on a recording and I was instantly interested. I said to Jon that I would have to scramble to put together a band. His response was to tell me about his friend, Jeff Diehl, and his many abilities as a musician and recording producer. Jeff had engineered the recording of Jon that I had previously heard. I started talking to Jeff early in 2007 and we started recording in the spring. Jon and Jeff have both been professional musicians and their experience has taken this project far beyond any expectations I could have had. Jeff's knowledge of the music industry and the humility of both Jon and Jeff have made this one of the most pleasant ventures I have ever been involved in. I hope you enjoy this music as much as we have enjoyed making it. Doug Life.
