The aim of the Faber Ensemble is to create a time/space of creative investigation calling into play different talents and perspectives. Indeed, Faber is the Latin root from which modern Italian derives the words fabbro (smith), fabbrica (factory), fabbricazione (fabrication): all words suggest the idea of doing, inventing. In order to create a dense layering of complexity, we often combine in a single production various art forms - music, composition, words, images, dance. In this case we juxtaposed musical creativity to that of an image, using for the purpose a watercolor by Jack Portland. A well-established affinity exists between watercolor technique and musical improvisation, for each creates a mutually reinforcing fabric of intertwining shades and colors, notes and rhythms. There is also a procedural affinity between the two art forms: just as the watercolor artist establishes a point of departure in the choice of subject and color, so a group of musicians creates a starting point based on the choice of tunes and key signatures. In establishing the initial conditions for this recording the Ensemble chose expressly to introduce a dynamic element by including in the group new musicians along side those who have worked together for many years. Thus was born an added element of spontaneity - or controlled risk - engendering a creative process guided by Antonio Artese in arrangements recorded in single long day of experimentation. All the tunes are standards; the exception is Blues for Greg, a modal blues composed expressly for this recording by the outstanding jazz musician Bill Smith.
