U.S. Out of North America
My second thought after the towers started falling on 9/11 was, oh christ, now our fearless, foolish leaders will use this as an excuse to start bombing people and places that have nothing to do with anything...(my first thought being "whoopee, we're all gonna die"). As I felt the pain and frustration of witnessing Congress' idiotic complicity with Bush's madness as well as the swell of patriotic furor that spread like a virus among the common folk, songs started rising from my guts and finding their way to my lips. I would walk the cold sandy beach near my home and sing and wonder and watch the seals in the water. My activism rose up out of it's too long dormancy and I got a 'Women In Black' vigil going in my town as well as started organizing and participating in anti-war protests in Maine. I have performed at many of these over the past several years as well as at other venues around the state. I am a Registered Maine Guide and I lead backcountry trips and vision quests. This work is nothing short of magical and feeds me like nothing else can. When the whole f***ing world looks like it's going to hell in a handbasket, the non-human ones remind me of the truth. My songs reflect these deeper experiences as well. I am also a radical feminist rabble rouser who believes, naively or not, that WE CAN CREATE SEA CHANGE, here and now. So...I offer this debut collection of original songs in the hope that it may inspire others to raise their voice for the benefit of the world...in whatever form that takes. The song styles are diverse and move from ballad to rap to bluesy, jazzy, folky, silly, in your face incredulous/outraged. I am fortunate to have some very talented musicians/singers on this CD: Rebecca Wing, Herb Clarke, Matt Hansen, Kathy Slack, Steve Muise, and Jud Caswell, who also did a bang up job recording/engineering. There is a good variety of instrumentation - guitar, bass, fiddle, piano, various percussion sounds, as well as Herb's wonderful hand drums.
