2nd Annual Songwriters Collection
2003 was a breakthrough year for the Highway 61 Folks Festival. Artists from as far away of a place called Gipf-Oberfrick, Switzerland and as near as Townhall Road in Mahtowa participated in a memorable day that included incredible music, friendship, food, fun and horseshoes. If the first year's Highway 61 Folks Festival was a success, then 2003 was a sensation. Over three times as many artists signed up to be a part of the Festival in 2003 and it was an extremely wonderful experience filing through all of the worthy 'demos' that were sent to our doorstep. Ultimately, 28 artists performed in an amazing range of original folk, acoustic and blues music that brought sunshine to a once again soggy day. We are getting used to the weather on our weekend in Mahtowa that we call the Highway 61 Folks Festival, and are realizing that the warmth and comfort that the artists bring is more than enough to heat up such an appreciative audience. 2003 also included an inspiring performance by a local bluegrass quartet that called themselves 'Trampled By Turtles'. Barefoot dancers insured that the grounds appeared as if a herd of reptiles had spun and danced until the morning light and squashed the dew soaked grass on that summer evening in August at Rob's Mahtowa Tavern. It was a fabulous end to a remarkable day. This Songwriters Collection is a project that includes such a wide variety of incredible music, talent and songs that entwine themselves into a compilation which is rich with the awesome personality of the infamous Highway 61.
