Shades of Grayson
I Ching Gatos began in San Antonio in 1990, although we were first called Tequila Mockingbird. This is tuneful music, presented with passion. Our live show is high energy fun! We are trying to be funny, even when we are dead serious. The songs are all about life as I see it, from my perspective, at the end of the last milenium, and at the beginning of this one. In the early 1990's, I Ching Gatos was the seminal alternative band on the San Antonio scene. Happening simultaneously with the band for me, songwriter Joe Sanchez, was marriage, parenthood: a girl child, Alicia, and learning to be a storyteller at The Circle School. The band broke up, became Loski Loski, drummer Joe Belk got married, the band dissovled, son, Ezra was born, and I Ching Gatos was reborn again, this time with daughter Alicia as bass player/keyboardist/vocalist. We finally produced an I Ching Gatos compilation of songs that we had played at Tacoland in the nineties. Alicia played on that album, Shades of Grayson, recorded at my home in San Antonio and in my home town of Weslaco, Texas. When Alicia grew up and went to college, my cousin Joe Martinez became the bass player. That is how everyone in the band today is named Joe. Luckily, we are not 'your average Joes', but we are, in fact, I Ching Gatos: singing the Mama doing the wheel, throwing the Ching, with upside-down money, and comfortable with sin . . . I Ching Gatos - to serve you better. Thank you for listening.
