'Guitars Alone 'New York Based Guitar duo team Satoshi Inoue /guitar Peter Bernstein /guitar -- Satoshi Inoue: 'Satohi Inoue is an excellent jazz guitarist with a keen musical imagination'Jim Hall Renowned guitarist Jim Hall calls his former protege Satoshi Inoue, 'an excellent jazz guitarist with a keen musical imagination.' The two performed together on a guitar duet that was featured on Hall's widely used instructional video collection called Jazz Guitar Master Class Volumes 1&2. In 2005, Hall and Inoue appeared in Village Vanguard 70th anniversary together. Born in Kobe Japan,Inoue studied Jazz Guitar at Fuji School of Music from 1979-81. Between 1981-1988, he led his own groups in Japan. He moved to New York in 1989 to study at The New School University where he met Hall. He has been on the faculty of the University since his senior year. Over the years, Inoue has toured with jazz greats such as James Moody; James Williams; Cecil Bridgewater; Frank Foster; Slide Hampton; Barry Harris; Jimmy Heath; Arnie Lawrence; Jack McDuff; Junior Mance; Jon Faddis; Clayton Brothers and Toshiko Akiyoshi. Inoue has recorded five albums as leader;Plays Satoshi (1996 Paddle Wheel Records), Songs (1999 Paddle Wheel Records) and Live At Smoke (2002 What's New Records), Guitars Alone (duett with Peter Bernstein,2003 What's New Records)and Melodic Compositions (2006 What's New Records). His own band has gigged at New York's top jazz venues - past and present - including The Blue Note, Sweet Basil, Birdland, Smoke, the Village Gate and Zinc Bar. For 12 years, Inoue has brought American musicians to Japan to conduct fall tours for concerts and workshops, including the 'Big Apple in Nonoichi' festival. Jazz critics and musicians have known about Satoshi Inoue for quite some time. A jazz historian Ira Gitler describes hearing Satoshi live in the early 90s at Sazerac House, a restaurant on New York's Hudson Street: 'I was taken with the unforced flow of his ideas and the mellow sound with which he transmitted them' he says. His lectures on jazz standards appear monthly in a Japanese jazz magazine called Jazz Life . --------- Peter Bernstein: Born September 3rd, 1967 in New York City, guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. During that time he has participated in over 60 recordings and numerous festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. As a leader, Peter has made five recordings for the Criss Cross Jazz label. The latest, Heart's Content, features the all-star rhythm section of Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, and Bill Stewart. While a student at The New School, Peter met the legendary guitarist Jim Hall, who asked him to participate in his Invitational Concert as part of the 1990 JVC Jazz Festival. The event featured such guitarists as John Scofield and Pat Metheny and was released as a CD by Music Masters. Hall once noted that Peter "...has paid attention to the past as well as the future. He is the most impressive young guitarists I've heard. He plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste." That same year, Peter was discovered by alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson and took part in the first of four recordings with him. He was a regular member of his group throughout the 1990s. "Some people just have it." Donaldson said. "...most of the time you have to teach someone what to do, but Peter knows it all." Peter has also played with legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb (Cobb's Mob), organist Larry Goldings, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Melvin Rhyne, drummer Bill Stewart, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Nicholas Payton, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell, and Eric Alexander and performed in North America, Europe and Asia and making numerous television appearances. Peter has taught at the Julliard School, Berklee College of Music, North Texas State University, the New School Jazz Program and the Jazz Conservatory in Amsterdam. Peter has been fortunate to gain the respect of his peers and mentors. He has been recognized in both the readers' and critics' polls in Downbeat Magazine for the past three years. He continues to hone his style through writing and performing and has developed a distinctive and unforgettable guitar voice that is all his own.
