He grew up on the lost shrouded island of Äelya, in the Essentir, the Shadow Sea, at the edge of the Pillars of Ása, protected by the light of the Iron Lamp. His father Rígel was High King of Norveria, and one of the Dispossessed. When Äelya was destroyed by the poison rain, Thámius Greycloak was (almost) the only survivor, and with the death of Rígel became High King. But no one in Norveria knew of this, as all assumed he had perished as well. But in truth he landed on a deserted island, spending many years there alone, a king of nothing but sand and trees. And so a lust for vengeance smoldered within him. At long last he was rescued by a ragtag group of brigands, and became their captain. His crew never found out his true lineage, for he never spoke of his past. He led them all over the Essentir and the Tir Taramar, harrying the ships of Dolgurth, Red King of Suderia, and destroying as much of his coastal infrastructure as possible. But all the while his true aim was to hunt down Anfall, Marshall of Dolgurth, responsible for murdering Rígel and bringing the poison rain to Äelya, in the ruin of which his mother also perished. In this quest he never wavered, and one winter's day he caught up with Anfall and his fleet at the Midmirth Archipelago. It was at Midmirth that Anfall's career of evil finally came to an end. But Dolgurth could not be dealt with so easily. No word came back to him of the fate of Anfall, but he began to hear rumors that the son of Rígel was alive and seeking to unite the remaining Dispossed. A bounty he placed upon the head of Thámius Arctinadur, of such price that even the Dark Queen Achmal began to seek for him. But for her there was more than gold to reap, for she believed her fate to be inextricably bound to that of Dolgurth. It was about this time that Thámius Greycloak entered the pool of Celiesen, and there met Änya of the Bright Water, and their journey to Isirion and beyond would shake the very foundations of Ása.
