Die Schone Magelone Op.33
Brahms's 1869 song cycle Die Schöne Magelone is based on a quasi-medieval novella by Ludwig Tieck about a Provençal knight- and his love for the beautiful maiden Magelone. As the songs alone leave much of the story untold, this version employs a speaker to place each one in context. Originally recorded in September 1997, this set features the great tenor Peter Schreier, accompanied by pianist András Schiff. Speaker Gert Westphal expresses the innocence of the fairy tale and captures the flavor of Tieck's archaic literary language perfectly.
