It seems that praise and worship music has become increasingly more popular over the past 10 years in mainstream Christian music, but praise and worship is more than just a genre of music to James Roots, it is his passion and as he would say, his calling. James has been around music his whole life. His dad, Tommy Roots, was considered one of the best steel guitar players in Country music and even though Tommy has gone to be with the Lord, his passion for music has left an imprint on James. I remember hearing my dad play his steel guitar every day at 6:00 a.m. in the morning....and I would think, It's too early.....I want to sleep some more! But that was my dads passion. Before I knew it, music became a big part of my life as well. James started playing acoustic guitar at age 12 and by the time he was a teenager he started singing on stage. James distinctly remembers being about 17 years old and singing at the Texas Armadillo with a band named Dixie before a sold out crowd. After singing his song, he remembers thinking, What am I leaving with these people? He knew they were being entertained, but was that it? After playing guitar in Young Life for a while, James started to feel a tug from God. Then at age 21, James got radically saved. It wasn't long before he got involved in the praise band at his church. During the next few years, he joined a couple of different Christian rock bands. He jokingly says that God saved me from Country and put me in Rock N Roll. He then played bass with some friends in a praise band at a local church and was there a few months when the praise and worship leader graduated from college and left town to start his career. It seemed like a natural move for James to step up to play his guitar and lead worship. It was at this point when James actually realized Gods calling on his life. Once I got saved, I knew that I was going to serve God through music, but it wasn't until I started leading worship that I realized that this was my passion.....to lead Gods people into His presence. James has been leading worship for nine years and is currently the Worship Pastor at New Community Church in Portland, Texas where he has been for the last four years. In addition to leading worship at New Community Church, James began playing his music in other churches and Christian venues. I am very thankful to my pastor and church family for letting me do what I love to do. We have a good time when we worship, but more than that, I know that God works in the hearts of His people through the music and that is what matters. You're Everything is James debut album which has just been released and is packed full of originals along with a few covers. He offers something for everyone everything from energetic praise songs to powerful worship songs to a classic hymn. With a sound and style uniquely his own, James hopes to offer something fresh that will touch the hearts and minds of everyone so don't be surprised if you find yourself singing along.
