In the Moment
James Nyoraku Schlefer is a leading performer and teacher of shakuhachi in New York City. He performs frequently with koto and shamisen ensembles both nationally and internationally and also performs solo concerts. In addition to performing the traditional repertoire, Schlefer plays modern music for the instrument and is an active composer. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center & Tanglewood. The classic music for shakuhachi (honkyoku) is a music of great depth and beauty. The penetrating sound of the bamboo has been a part of meditation for centuries and still today allows for moments of calmness and reflection. The six pieces on this recording are drawn from several schools of shakuhachi and in their variety, present a broad spectrum of traditional sounds and melodies.
