Poka Dotted Zebra Stripes
Japanesian Barbie is from Tucson, Arizona. The lads, and lady, of the band, blend together a wide variety of genres, including: classical, jazz, 80's synth pop, and geek rock, creating a style that is particularly their own. Erin Barnes, contributing writer for Hyperactive music magazine says about the band: "Japanesian Barbie's classical training, intellectual influences, and youthful energy produce 'piano-driven rock' that is quirky and charming." The original lineup for Japanesian Barbie consisted of Noah Harkey on keyboard and vocals, Travis Michalak on Guitar, and John Knott on drums. During this period the band wrote a plethora of music and recorded a full length CD: "Live in Tokyo." The group also won the Arizona Daily Star Battle of the Bands. Former drummer John Knott had other plans besides the band. He decided to attend Cal Arts for music production. John was replaced by Vincent Salcido, the band's current drummer. Vincent's first appearance was a live broadcast on KXCI local radio with Don Jennings. Japanesian gave an interview and played a music set, and the latter was turned into the band's second album. The group matured in songwriting ability and technicality. The talent of violinist Emma Harkey was also spotted and added to the lineup. She has become an integral part of the band's sound. Recently, Japanesian Barbie has recorded a full length CD, produced by John Knott with art by Keegan Rider. The CD is titled "Poka Dotted Zebra Stripes." The band feels most prideful of this album above the others and is very excited about the release on March 30th, 2007. Japanesian Barbie has always been an extremely experimental group. Since our first real appearance in 2004, J. Barbie has changed soo much! With the help of Adam Carlisle, Charles Weaver, John Knott, Noah Harkey, Travis Michalak, Vincent Salcido, Emma Harkey, Keegan Rider, and many other friends and fans, Japanesian has become what it is today.
