Hailing from Minneapolis, MN, the band has been laying down grooves together for seven years and counting. Jaysboatcar is: Jessie Lesmeister - drums, vocals, Jerry Schaefer - percussion, vocals, Dave Myers - bass, vocals, Jason Larsen - alto, tenor, baritone saxophones, vocals, Chad Drever - Hammond organ, Rhodes, Clav, synthesizer, vocals, and Peter Mitchell - guitars, vocals. This six-headed hydra travels around and amidst the styles of electronica, jazz, funk, and rock, never confined, always ready to throw down some solid grooves. Their instrumental songs hint of Galactic and the Meters, while their witty lyrical songs are reminiscent of Frank Zappa and Ween. Gravity is the first studio album, recorded live, without the aid of studio magic. "Who's Jay?" You may ask. Well, most bands would agree that the hardest thing to do is come up with a name. Everything is in the name. That being said, we had reached that all-important junction and were completely stumped. Names were adopted and dropped daily. What kind of name would give us carte blanche to play whatever we wanted? One night, as we were taking a break from the groove, we happened to find a worn out spiral notebook lying on the table that belonged to Jessie's eccentric older brother, Jay. Inside this worn out spiral notebook were hundreds and hundreds of drawings of a conceptual boatcar. Not the "normal" boatcars or amphibious vehicles that you may see every now and then, but a unique boatcar with masts, sails, wheels, and more. There were drawings, or blueprints, from every conceivable angle: port side, stern side, even from the crow's nest down to the deck. As we turned the pages, the mixture of madness and creativity was palpable, raw, and oh so relative. It was us. It was destiny. We were to be ......Jaysboatcar.
