Trips to the Empire State
A native New Yorker, he's 26 years old, Jeff Martinez, a street-scene voice and a heart full of yellow-taxi songs straight out of Brooklyn. With hooks themed in rich, classic melody, expansive, sky-scraping tales of love, life and longing, Martinez evokes a twisted Paul Simon, a straight Evan Dando. No smoke, no mirrors, no cod histrionics. When you have a talent for songwriting it's a pretty straightforward, natural affair. Martinez makes it look easy with the gently crafted accessibility of his honest, engaging songs belying subtle and often deeply personal reflections. 'Blue Eyed Queen', 'Can I Get A Line ?', 'Falling Star' don't pout, don't sulkily demand your affection, these songs barb then slow burn. Like the great seducers Low, Pete Yorn, Buffalo Tom, Red House Painters, Martin Sexton, less is really much more. It's early days for Martinez and there's a planet of sound for him to discover and share with us. The early signs are encouraging, great tone, great ear and if the faith is held, a great future too.
