'The Vision Quest is an ancient ceremony in which one goes to a solitary place, typically on top of a hill, for a time of prayer and meditation to seek guidance and blessings. The intention of this CD is to provide you, the listener, with an opportunity to experience the magic of going through such an event. " More than simply a pleasant collection of songs to play while meditating or relaxing, this CD presents a unique insight into what it would be like to go through an actual Vision Quest ceremony. The beautifully written liner notes bring the experience to life, and make listening to this CD an inspirational experience in and of itself- from the comfort of your living room chair! Here are some examples of how the track notes describe the various stages of going through the process of a Vision Quest: Track 2: "Cry Of The Concrete Coyote" Driving to work one morning through the concrete canyons of freeways and office buildings you are struck with a pang of emptiness as you think about a growing void in your soul. A longing to "get back to nature" nags at you- take a vacation, do something spiritual. You overhear someone talking about getting ready to do their Vision Quest. When you ask about it, something resonates deep within you as they describe the experience. "That sounds like just what I've been looking for..." Track 4: "On The Hill" The big day comes. You drive to the land where the ceremony is being held. Your supporter helps get your bundle of belongings together- all the things you want with you in your questing site- and the next thing you know you're in a sweat lodge with people making prayers for your protection and good fortune on the quest. Words can't describe the feeling as your head is covered and you are led up the hill to your sacred spot. Then they are gone, and you are alone. Track 5: "Hidden Wolf" It is already dark by the time you get to your site, and it's a bit unsettling as you try to get yourself situated on your blanket. Alone, in the dark woods. Noises- crackling in the bushes, footsteps... Then, like a knife slicing through the darkness, a long, lonely howl. Your first reaction is terror. Then, as the howling grows into a haunting chorus, your feeling changes. The sound becomes comforting, and helps you feel connected. You are overwhelmed with the realization of how far you are from the concrete canyons of your morning drive to work. Track 6: "Many Rains" Your first day on the hill it rains. At first you are irritated, bothered, as you attempt to stay dry. "I can't go through the next four days wet! I'll get sick, or freeze to death!" After a while your attitude changes. You begin to see the gentle beauty of the rain. You think about your purpose here on the hill and see the rain as cleansing, bringing new life. Washing over you, the rain becomes a good thing. Track 9: "Mystery Council" Deep in the night you hear a sound, a rustling in the bushes. The next thing you know Skunk appears, and walks around your site! You don't have time to even react when Raccoon follows him and sits next to him. One by one, all the animals of the forest appear and parade past you, forming a circle around you. As if they don't even know you are there, they hold council, and talk about their Medicine ways. Then, turning towards you, they call your name, and offer you a gift. Track 10: "Deep Ocean" For three days you've been in constant prayer and meditation, forcing yourself to continue when you feel you can't go on. The memories, the feelings, the dreams; it's as if you are swimming through the ocean of your own unconscious. Yet as deep as it seems to go, there is a still, small voice, which anchors you, and keeps you from becoming lost- or drowned. This is the Medicine of the Vision Quest. Track 12: "Procession" There is nothing glamorous about bringing you back in the back of a pickup truck, cold, wet, and dirty. Yet as you approach the camp you begin to hear the drumming, the flutes, and the singing. There's an excitement in the air. One by one, the people return from their Vision Quest, entering into a festive arena. Family, loved ones, supporters- all are there, awaiting your arrival to welcome you home. Colorful ribbons blowing in the wind, everyone wearing beautiful clothes, tears of joy, as the celebration of New Life begins.
