Finished Business is a labor of love, my second volume in a 'bookends' project, reflecting on eight decades in the music field and showcasing my basic love for, and preservation of, the 'standards' idiom of music as popularized in the Big Bands era-a classic American genre that is all too rare these days. But on this recording, at least, a new generation of Big Band musicians had a chance to play-and play they did! In choosing a producer/writer for my second CD, it was important to find a musician well-versed in the standards idiom, and a pianist, if possible, to deal with an aging singer's realities. In a casual stop at a fashionable night spot, I found the man I was after! Not only was Brian a killer player, but the son of Bob Piper, a musician-writer-pianist long recognized in the older, big band genre whom I'd worked with at two major production companies. From products for major commercial accounts to conducting at the prestigious Venetian Room in Dallas Brian has earned the industry recognition well due to a man of such multiple talents, working with such luminaries as James Earl Jones, Patrick Bergen and Tim Curry. His growing reputation has led to gigs with countless respected figures across the entire musical spectrum, from country western to jazz, from Jerry Jeff Walker to Kenny Rankin, and has conducted for legends such as Eartha Kitt and Rose Mary Clooney. I felt fortunate when he agreed to lend his considerable abilities and energy to my little project. The recording session in Dallas were a dream sequence with hand-picked players who became caught up in the writing and the ensemble sounds of a great band with a jumping rhythm section. With Brian's direction and inspiring writing and producing, I've been able to truly complete the other bookend of the two CDs, 'Finished Business.' Enjoy!
