Resurrection By Degrees
Johnny Blackthorn is a singer/songwriter with a repertoire that spans genres. His intelligent, biting lyrics are interposed with an infectious blend of roots rock, folk, blues and country that is heavily influenced by his Mississippi Delta upbringing. Blackthorn's music refers to the region with singles that are, according to one reviewer, 'poetic, haunting, [and] eerily familiar.' Blackthorn's third album, 'Dry,' is scheduled for release in April 2012. This album, following his debut collection, 'I Belong Here' (1999) and his sophomore album, 'Resurrection by Degrees' (2004), promises to be his most soulful album yet. Recorded in Boxmeer, Netherlands with legendary recording artist BJ Baartmans, 'Dry' carries echoes of Dylan and Pink Floyd and calls to mind the brilliance of Tarentino's soundtracks. This is where we see Johnny Blackthorn hit his stride. A recording and performing artist since 1996, Blackthorn has worked with the likes of Brian Fones, Dave Hill, Sony Bose, Lee Bowles and BJ Baartmans. In 2003-04, Blackthorn teamed up with Fones and Hill to form the Johnny Blackthorn Band and performed extensively in and around the Richmond, Virginia area. His music has been reviewed by Style Weekly, the Richmond Music Journal and the Global Muse who said of his debut CD, 'In that Bob Dylan sort of way, Johnny Blackthorn creates a mixture of folk and blues with little more than an acoustic guitar and great harmonies....The music takes on a strong folk influence with a deep rooted blues groove....This is the kind of music that makes you think. It's very refreshing to hear music with such passion and deep thoughtfulness.' In 2011, Johnny Blackthorn created his own label, Mission 66 Records. 'Dry' will be the label's first release with plans for a fourth album, 'The Year of August,' to be released in 2013 along with limited edition re-releases of 'I Belong Here' and 'Resurrection by Degrees.'
