Jonas Ganzemuller - as & ss / Chris Cheek - ts / Nick Paul - p / Jeff Koch - p / Bastian Weinhold - dr The young saxophonist from New York makes a profound statement with his first record 'Midnight Runner'. The music is carefully composed and covers a tremendous spectrum of styles and sounds. The CD starts off with the bouncy but atmospheric jazz tune 'Riverside Walk' before swaying into the title track of this album. The bass line of 'We Play' calls for a heavy groove with a little bit of a samba feel and gives the band plenty of room for virtuosity and playfulness. The following composition clearly borrows from the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Chris Cheek's tenor solo shines sweetly before moving into a baroque-like duet with the alto saxophone. After a graceful alto saxophone solo interlude by Jonas Ganzemuller, the band breaks loose on 'Disjoint Venture'. The tune is packed with energy and ends after a vicious drum solo by Bastian Weinhold. Nick Paul's meditative solo piano intro seeks serenity and leads into the melancholic 'Sakura Chiru'. In 'Quiescence', the band then gently floats through different meters and soundscapes before the saxophones play the breathtakingly fast theme of 'Expressions'. The final track is a tribute to Louis Armstrong: 'Satchmo!' It brilliantly concludes this CD that is as versatile as it's performers, with a piece of simplicity on a groove from New Orleans.
