The Julie Puppets hail from Minneapolis, Minnesota as five guys with daytime jobs and a nighttime band. Started in 2001 by Russ Staiger (lead vocals, guitar) and Ben Black (backing vocals, guitar) as a duo, the line-up was finalized in 2005 with the addition of Rich Tudor (bass), Jason Rufledt (effects, synths) and Travis Haahr (drums). They combine non-standard chord use and individually simple parts to create a full-spectrum sound with multiple layers. Much of their rock philosophy is inherited from latter-day rock heroes such as Jeff Buckley and Radiohead as well as throw-backs to music pillars found in Hank Williams, Sr., Johnny Cash, ELO, and Cream. The end result is the sound you were looking for. Often methodical and inventive during the song writing process, The Julie Puppets stand to be one of the torch-bearers in music's fight back from cookie-cutter rock.
