Night & Day
What do you get when you combine eighteen of Philadelphia's finest musicians and vocalists with a library of the 20th Century's greatest music? The Jump City Jazz Orchestra, the Philadelphia area's premiere big band. Jump City Jazz Orchestra captures the magic and excitement of over sixty years of big band and swing music, from the traditional big band sounds of the World War II-era big bands like Glenn Miller and Woody Herman, through the concert pieces popularized by bands like the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the 1950s and 1960s, to the modern jump swing sound of artists like the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy who have brought big band swing back to the mainstream. With a repertoire of well over four hundred songs and a full big-band horn section, JCJO's 17-piece big band faithfully recreates the powerful sound of legends such as Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie, and the singers who sang with them, like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin and Rosemary Clooney. Night and Day, JCJO's third CD release, captures the JCJO at it's finest. Trumpeter Jay Webb shines on a soulful rendition of Hoagy Carmichael's classic Georgia on My Mind, while saxman Vince Lardear gives a virtuoso performance on the contemporary jazz number, Little Girl. Keith Spencer and Karen Wilhelm show why they're the finest pair of big band vocalists in Philadelphia on numbers such as Fly Me to the Moon, S'Wonderful, and the title track, Night and Day. In addition to these outstanding individual performances, songs like That's All, Time After Time and a hard-swinging version of the timeless In the Mood highlight the band's tight rhythm section and crisp ensemble sound.
