Not 4 Sale
Lara Karuna, is not your typical pop act. In fact, nothing about this ethnically ambiguous chameleon fits in a box. Born on the same day as TUPAC, KARUNA embodies much of the same complexity of dark and light that defined the legendary rapper; a fighter instinct, masked under a magnetic smile. The layers to this singer/songwriter/producer will continue to surprise and intrigue you. KARUNA fell in love with music and performing at age eight when she was cast in the Bay Area Theaters\' production of Annie. Growing up in Oakland, Ca., KARUNA sharpened her skills under the "trial by fire" soul/blues/gospel tradition, where folks will boo you if you don\'t bring it. Since being in Los Angeles, KARUNA has worked with such heavy-hitting talents as Kanye West, grammy-winning producer Scott Storch (Christina Aguilera, Pink, Beyonce, Dr. Dre), Grammy-winning producers, "The Funktwons," A.K.A, Tim 'N' Bob (Mary J. Blige, Brandy, and Bobby Valentino), legendary producer and Grammy winner, Richard Perry, (Pointer Sisters, Carly Simon, The Beatles, Ray Charles) and producer Mike City (Usher, Brandy, Sunshine Anderson, Carl Thomas). She has performed the National Anthem both for a Clippers basketball game and at the Maddbacker\'s Celebrity Basketball Game. She has also toured with "Blacklicious," opening for such acts as Ben Harper, Maceo Parker, and "De la Soul." As a songwriter she wrote and performed the chorus for Aceleyone\'s song, \'The Good, the Bad, the Ugly,\' as well as \'Lil Tupac,\' a song featured in the movie, \'My Baby\'s Daddy.\' Working with the above-mentioned producers, KARUNA - a quick study - watched and learned, soon producing her own music. Preparing to release her debut album, "Not 4 Sale," which she both wrote and produced, KARUNA blends breezy, catchy melodies that burn into your brain, with strong, honest, heartfelt lyrics. Like KARUNA, her music is deceptively sweet; a veneer of irresistibly singable choruses, surreptitiously masking strong statements on love, life and our world. Songs like the rock/hip hop tinged title track, \'Not 4 Sale,\' where KARUNA delivers a scathing commentary on being a woman in the male dominated music industry, or In the danceable, funk infused, \'Liars,\' in which KARUNA sings seductively about the allure of our consumer culture, and our leaders cynical manipulation of us through it, show KARUNA\'S versatility and depth. KARUNA has performed all around Los Angeles, taking her blend of pop/rock/soul coined \'Urban Rock,\' to such renowned venues as Temple Bar, The Roxy, The Gig, Highlands and Little Temple, to name a few. Her highly successful "Not 4 Sale" friends and family album release party at Cinespace, sponsored by KISS FM, brought in a 1000 fans! She also recently opened for R&B act Marques Houston at UCLA. With a growing fan base and a debut album just being released, KARUNA is an artist to watch out for.
